Two hikers reported lost rescued in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: Two hikers, aged 22 and 24, were rescued after they were reported lost at Bukit Mawar, here, on Wednesday.

The Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station received a distress call at 7.13pm and rescue personnel arrived at the location at 7.33pm.

The victims were found at 8.40pm.

Joining the search and rescue operation were the Sandakan Malaysian Civil Defence Force, local hikers and others.

The victims were successfully brought out of the hill at 9.26pm and handed over to the Ministry of Health personnel for treatment.

The operation ended at 9.33pm.

In another case, the Sandakan Fire Department took about five hours to put out a cable pile fire at the Telekom Malaysia (TM) Sandakan cable storage site at Mile 2, here, on Tuesday evening.

Thick plumes of smoke were visible from a distance following the 3.02pm incident.

Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station Chief Severinus Sainkui said 16 officers and personnel carried out the firefighting operation, assisted by TM and police personnel.

The operation ended at 8.13pm and the cause and estimated losses are still under investigation.
