At least two people were killed when a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck the southern Chinese region of Guangxi, state news agency Xinhua reported on Monday.

A 91-year-old man who was initially reported missing could later be rescued alive and was brought to hospital, Xinhua reported, citing local authorities.

The quake struck the city of Liuzhou at 0:21 am (1621 GMT Sunday) at a depth of 8 kilometres, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre.

State broadcaster CCTV reported, citing emergency forces, that 13 buildings had collapsed by Monday morning and more than 7,000 people had been evacuated.
