Two locals fined RM30,000 for harbouring, hiring undocumented migrants

Kota Kinabalu: Two local men were fined a total of RM30,000 by the Sessions Court here for employing an undocumented migrant and allowing four others to stay on premises under their control.

Mohd Ansar Maidin and Mohd Azmi Che Omar pleaded guilty separately before Judge Hurman Hussain to their respective charges under the Immigration Act.

Mohd Ansar was fined RM10,000, in default six months’ imprisonment, for hiring an undocumented Filipino at Restoran Bismillah along Jalan Burung Kereto, Lembaga Padi, Inanam, on July 15.

Mohd Azmi was fined RM5,000 or six months’ jail for each of four undocumented migrants—an Indonesian and three Filipinos—found staying at Nikki Catering in Jalan Tuaran, Likas, bringing his total fine to RM20,000.

In the same court, two undocumented Filipinos were each sentenced to four months’ imprisonment followed by deportation to their country of origin after pleading guilty to entering Sabah without valid travel or identity documents.
