TWO men have been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle 10 cows from Thailand after their lorry was intercepted by the General Operations Force (PGA) during Op Taring Kandang on Wednesday.
The suspects, aged 38 and 27, were detained at 4.20 pm along Jalan Gelang Mas as they tried to flee upon spotting the police presence, but were swiftly apprehended.
Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Ab Hamid said a search of the vehicle uncovered the cattle, and initial investigations revealed that the suspects failed to produce any valid documentation for the livestock.
“The cows are believed to have been smuggled in through an illegal border crossing for sale in the local market,” he said on Friday.
He added that the lorry driver did not possess a valid driving licence, and the vehicle’s road tax had expired.
The total value of the seizure, including the lorry, was estimated at RM150,000. The case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953 and the Road Transport Act 1987.
Nik Ros Azhan said the suspects and seized items have been handed over to the Kelantan Department of Veterinary Services for further action.
