According to ChinaPress, two local Chinese men were arrested in the early hours of the morning after police discovered a large quantity of fireworks and firecrackers stored at their homes without a valid permit. The arrests followed complaints from neighbours after the fireworks were set off during prayers on the eighth night of the Lunar New Year.
According to Kluang district police as mentioned by ChinaPress, a report was received at approximately 11.30pm on February 24 regarding the alleged illegal storage of a substantial amount of firecrackers in a residential area within Kluang town.
According to ChinaPress, Kluang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin confirmed in a statement that officers launched an operation shortly after midnight on February 25 under Ops Cantas and Ops Limau. Between 12.35am and 1.11am, police raided two separate residential locations in the town and detained two men aged between 25 and 41.
Initial investigations revealed that one of the suspects works locally as a shop assistant, while the other is employed in Singapore as a painter.
During the operation, police seized various brands of fireworks and firecrackers. Among the items confiscated were a box labelled Happy Boom Assorted Celebration Cake Repeater with 138 shots that had already been discharged, two lighters, eight boxes of Happy Boom Assorted Celebration Cake Repeater fireworks measuring 1.5 inches with 138 shots each, and two boxes of Happy Boom Red Cracker Cake firecrackers.
Police investigations further found that both suspects have prior criminal and drug-related records. However, urine tests conducted on the two men returned negative results for drug abuse.
The case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957, which covers acts involving explosives that may endanger life or property. If convicted, offenders may face a prison sentence of up to seven years, a fine, or both.
Authorities reminded the public that the storage and use of fireworks without proper permits remain an offence under Malaysian law, even during festive celebrations.
