- Two men, aged 55 and 59, have been arrested by Nottinghamshire Police on suspicion of misconduct in a public office in connection with operating practices within the mortuary service at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust.
- The arrests were made as part of Operation Perth, Nottinghamshire Police's ongoing investigation into maternity services at NUH, which uncovered breaches of Human Tissue Act regulations concerning the management of mortuary services.
- This development precedes the publication of a major independent review, led by Donna Ockenden, into significant maternity failings at NUH, which is expected to be released on Wednesday.
- Deputy chief constable Rob Griffin stated that police are contacting families already identified as being directly affected by the issues within the NUH trust mortuaries, acknowledging the distress this news will cause.
- The arrests are part of a wider criminal investigation into NUH's maternity failings, which includes a corporate manslaughter case launched last year, with the General Medical Council and Nursing and Midwifery Council also investigating individual staff.
