  • A Chinese national, Zhang Kequn, was arrested at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport last week with over 2,000 live ants.
  • Zhang, 27, had previously evaded arrest in Kenya and was detained while attempting to leave the country.
  • A second man, Charles Mwangi, was arraigned on Monday, accused of supplying live ants to foreign traffickers and linked to a previous ant shipment seized in Bangkok.
  • Both Zhang and Mwangi pleaded not guilty to charges including dealing with wildlife species without a permit.
  • They have been remanded in custody until March 27. Experts suggest there is a growing trend in biopiracy involving lesser-known species like ants.
