Two missing for a week in Tawau found safe

TAWAU: An oil palm plantation worker and his nephew, who went missing for two weeks, were found alive on Friday.

District Fire and Rescue Station Chief Jemishin Ujin said Iwan Musakir, 33, and Al Fajri Anto, 11, were found by the search party at 9am.

They were then sent to the Disaster Operation Control Centre to meet their family.

“Firefighters inspected the victims to ensure they are in good condition,” he said, adding the operation ended at 1pm.

Read more Jemishin said the search and rescue (SAR) operation on Friday was the ninth mission after the eighth one was called off at 6pm on Thursday.

“The hilly terrain made it difficult for the SAR team comprising six firefighters, 13 policemen, 12 General Operations Force personnel, four Civil Defence Department personnel, 16 Forestry officers, three Sapura personnel and the public.”

The SAR was launched on June 29 after the Tawau Fire and Rescue Department was informed of the incident.

Jemishin said both victims were missing after a hunting trip in the forest area near Ladang Op 6 Usahawan Borneo Brumas on June 24.

“They were said to have gone hunting in a group of eight people before they split into several groups in the forest.

“Search efforts were then initiated by their friends but to no avail,” he said.
