Kota Kinabalu: Two new telecommunication towers have been completed in Bongawan, as part of Phase One of the National Digital Network (Jendela) programme, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Yakub Khan.
“As of the third quarter of 2022, two out of four planned towers have been completed and are now operational in SK Ulu Lumagar and SK Lingan Lama, Bongawan. The rest are expected to be completed in 2023.
“In total, 30 towers have been upgraded to the 4G network whereas 388 out of 670 premises have been installed with optical fibres. This project is expected to complete by the end of 2022,”
He said during question time at the State Legislative Assembly sitting, Wednesday, in response to Bongawan Assemblyman Dr Daud Yusof who asked if 5G connectivity would be brought to Bongawan.
Yakub said Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) does not plan to implement 5G coverage in rural areas yet, including Bongawan, as the technology is prioritised in areas with high economic activities given its meaningful impact on enterprises and industry sectors.
“However, the DNB does target for 80 per cent of populous areas nationwide to have 5G coverage by the end of 2024.
“This rapid and widespread implementation will reduce the digital divide among the community,” he said.
Yakub said although Bongawan is yet to enjoy 5G coverage, the State Government will commit to completing the first phase of the Jendela programme in the constituency first.
