Initial investigations found the incident took place on March 22 at a Chinese cemetery in Batu Gantong, Ayer Itam.

GEORGE TOWN: A couple caught engaging in an indecent act at a cemetery were arrested yesterday and remanded for three days until March 26 to assist investigations.

A 38-second video of the incident had earlier gone viral, with a woman confronting the pair and accusing them of repeatedly disrespecting the site, triggering public outrage.

The suspects, a 37-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man, were arrested separately yesterday (March 23) at a flat near Jalan Padang Tembak and in front of a building in Jalan Paya Terubong, Sungai Ara, respectively.

Northeast district police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad said initial investigations found the incident took place on March 22 at a Chinese cemetery in Batu Gantong, Ayer Itam.

“Both individuals involved are believed to be locals,” he said, adding that both suspects admitted involvement in the case.

He said police received a report at around noon yesterday from a 69-year-old local man regarding the video circulating on social media.

Police are also probing the dissemination of the video.

“We will investigate first,” he told theSun.

The case is being investigated under Section 294(a) and Section 509 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. The offences relate to the act and the circulation of the video online.
