TONGOD: A seven-year-old boy and a 79-year-old woman were swept away and killed in a flash flood at Kampung Bangkulut, here, on Thursday night.
Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue chief Hairi Otuh said his team received a distress call at 9.46pm and reached the village, about 169km away, at 3.01am on Friday.
He said both victims were carried away while attempting to cross a flooded road after water overflowed from a sudden surge upstream.
The elderly Indonesian woman was found about 250 metres from where she was last seen, while the Malaysian boy was later discovered roughly 200 metres downstream.
Both were confirmed dead at the scene and handed over to police, with the search operation ending at 5.04am after river levels receded.
