Kota Kinabalu: A Toyota Vigo belonging to the Sabah Veterinary Department and a six-tonne lorry were damaged after they collided with a moving passenger train at the traffic light junction near Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), here, Thursday.

The 44-year-old Vigo driver and 38-year-old lorry driver escaped unscathed in the 3pm accident. Kota Kinabalu Police Chief ACP Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the train was heading towards Kota Kinabalu from Papar, while the two vehicles were heading towards the airport from the Luyang direction.

Mohd Zaidi, who was at the scene, said investigations are underway to identify the cause of the accident.

Meanwhile, the gateman of the rail crossing claimed that they were initially informed via WhatsApp that the train will not be passing through that afternoon due to some problems with it.

However, the train suddenly appeared and it hit the rear of the lorry before hitting the passenger side door of the Vigo.

Several passengers on board the train, including the 51-year-old train driver, escaped injuries.
