Two women die in Lahad Datu crash

LAHAD DATU: Two women were killed in an accident involving a Proton Saga, Perodua Alza, a lorry, a motorcycle and an excavator at KM14 along Jalan Lahad Datu-Tawau on Saturday.

Both victims are the driver (21 years) and front passenger (35 years) of the Proton Saga who were heading towards Lahad Datu from Tawau with five others in the rear seat.

District Acting Police Chief, Superintendent Jimmy Panyau said preliminary police investigation found that the 4.30pm incident occurred when the Proton Saga lost control and entered the opposite direction before colliding with a lorry.

The lorry then hit a Perodua Alza and a motorcycle in the opposite direction causing the Alza and motorcycle to plunge into a ravine, where road construction was ongoing.

Jimmy said the Perodua Alza later crashed into an excavator which parked in the construction area.

“The Proton Saga’s driver was confirmed dead at the scene while her passenger died while on the way to hospital. All passengers of the Proton Saga aged between 2 and 15 as well as the motorcyclist were taken to the hospital,” he said.

The lorry driver and Perodua Alza’s driver did not sustain serious injuries.

According to Jimmy, investigation is ongoing under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police calls on the public who witnessed the accident to contact Traffic Investigation Officer, Inspector Humaidi Harun at 089-881255 or come to the nearest police station to assist in investigations.
