Two women survive flood ordeal at newly reopened Tamparuli crossing

TAMPARULI: Two women from the peninsula were rescued after their car was swept into floodwaters while attempting to navigate the low-level crossing here on Thursday evening.

The victims, who had visited the State to climb Mount Kinabalu, were heading back to Kota Kinabalu in a Perodua Bezza around 7pm following their climb.

A witness said the driver was unfamiliar with the route and had relied solely on the Waze navigation application amidst deteriorating weather, rising waters, and encroaching darkness that caused the vehicle to float.

Alert members of the public acted quickly to pull both women to safety, though several personal belongings and identification documents were lost when the car submerged.

The crossing had only reopened to motorists on Thursday following a nine-month closure for structural repair works caused by road subsidence, while official statements from relevant authorities are still pending.
