Doctors at the National University Hospital (NUH) in Singapore are calling a two-year-old girl a “miracle baby” after she defied all odds and survived an aggressive brain tumor located in her brainstem.
The girl, identified only as E, was born in January 2022 with a tumor so rare and aggressive that doctors initially gave her only weeks to live. However, her parents refused to give up hope and sought additional consultations.
A team of specialists at NUH, led by neurosurgeon Dr. Vincent Nga, performed a complex biopsy on the infant to determine the type of cancer and explore treatment options. The biopsy revealed a high-grade glioma, a fast-growing cancer.
Despite the grim diagnosis, a remarkable turn of events occurred. Scans taken three months after the biopsy showed the tumor hadn’t grown, a highly unusual development for this type of cancer.
Doctors believe the biopsy itself may have triggered an immune response in E’s body, helping to fight the tumor.
Six months later, the tumor had shrunk by half, alleviating pressure on E’s brainstem and resolving her initial symptoms.
Today, E is a thriving toddler, attending childcare and playing with her older sister.
While the tumor remains, it has stabilized, and doctors have identified potential targets for future treatment if needed.
