Two young suspects detained over newborn baby abandoned at Skudai mosque car park

POLICE have detained a young man and a woman to assist investigations into the discovery of a newborn baby girl who was left at a mosque car park in Taman Universiti, Skudai, last Saturday.

Johor Bahru North district police chief Assistant Commissioner Radin Ramlan Radin Taha said both suspects, local citizens aged 18 and 19, were arrested at Taman Universiti at about 2.15am today by officers from the district criminal investigation division.

“Checks found that both suspects have no prior criminal record, and urine tests conducted on them returned negative results,” he said in a statement.

Both suspects are expected to be brought before the Johor Bahru Magistrate’s Court today for a remand application.

The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandoning or concealing a baby with the intent of desertion, an offence which carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Reports earlier stated that the baby girl was discovered alive, wrapped in a towel and still with her umbilical cord attached, at a mosque car park in the area.

Radin Ramlan said police received a report at 7.33pm from a witness who heard a baby crying before the infant was taken to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for treatment and observation. The baby is now reported to be in stable condition. - April 14, 2026
