Türkiye announces steep electricity and natural gas price hikes for households and industry, citing rising global energy costs and domestic market pressures.
ISTANBUL: Türkiye has announced substantial price increases for electricity and natural gas. The hikes, set to take effect on Saturday, are attributed to rising global and domestic energy costs by the country’s regulators.
Electricity prices for residential subscribers will rise by 25%. The agricultural sector will see a nearly identical increase of 24.8%.
Public and private services on low-voltage grids face a 17.5% hike. Medium-voltage industrial users will see a more modest 5.8% adjustment.
Simultaneously, wholesale natural gas prices for residential consumers will increase by an average of 25%. The state utility BOTAS confirmed it is transitioning to a tiered pricing system for households to manage consumption.
The industrial sector will also face higher gas costs. Prices for industrial consumers will rise by an average of 18.61%, while gas for electricity generation increases by 19.42%.
Energy authorities attributed the adjustments to sustained upward pressure on production and distribution costs. The move follows a surge in global energy benchmarks, driven by supply chain concerns in the critical Strait of Hormuz.
