U Mobile has recently enabled 5G for its customers but only on its newer postpaid and prepaid lineup. Now it appears that U Mobile is gradually expanding its 5G support for older plans as customers on Unlimited Hero P139 can now connect to DNB’s 5G network.

An Unlimited Hero P139 subscriber has just gotten a message informing him that he can experience 5G at no extra cost. However, there’s a 5G Fair Usage Policy (FUP) of 1,000GB.

To recap, the P139 postpaid plan which costs RM139/month offers unlimited data and calls, 50GB of hotspot data plus 3GB of free data roaming in 36 countries. Interestingly, P139 isn’t listed under U Mobile’s 5G FAQ on supported 5G plans. For postpaid, they are only listing U Postpaid 38, 68, 98 and FamilyShare lines are their supported plans. The P139 plan appears to be the first “unlimited” U Mobile postpaid plan that’s enabled for 5G but it is limited by a FUP.

To use 5G, you’ll need to ensure that you have a compatible 5G Android smartphone. Not all 5G smartphones can connect to the 5G network on U Mobile, and this also includes the iPhone. In most cases, Samsung and Apple devices would require a software update in order to connect to 5G.

At the moment, a total of five telcos (Yes 5G, Unifi Mobile, Celcom, U Mobile and Digi) are offering 5G services to consumers in Malaysia. Maxis remains the only telco without 5G access as it aims to settle the 5G access agreement with DNB by January 2023.
