KUCHING — U Mobile Sdn Bhd has completed 78 out of 81 towers assigned to them under the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela), surpassing other telecommunications companies involved in the same project, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said.
He noted that while some towers have been completed for months — in some cases up to nine months — they remain inactive.
“I’ve asked the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) to review the situation and issue directives to prevent further delays,” he added.
During a visit to the Jendela tower project in Kampung Sungai Aur, Fahmi also highlighted the Smart 600 project by the Sarawak government, with 325 towers completed and operational.
“With RM42 million in funding from MCMC, we aim to complete more towers and bring benefits to the people,” he said.
In other news, Fahmi revealed that a pilot project using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite technology, which will allow telecommunications services to be delivered directly to devices without the need for traditional towers, is set to launch by mid-2025.
“As long as the sky is clear and we’re not in a forest, there will be basic coverage, especially in emergencies,” he explained. — November 10, 2024
