U Mobile has announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI as it looks to become Malaysia’s first AI-enabled telco. The partnership will see U Mobile integrate OpenAI’s AI capabilities across its business, including customer experiences, workforce productivity, software development, data analytics, network operations and cybersecurity.

U Mobile will also get early access to OpenAI’s latest frontier models, allowing both companies to develop and test practical AI applications. As part of the deal, AWS will support the initiative with cloud infrastructure and technical expertise.

“Innovation has always been part of U Mobile’s DNA. From introducing new digital experiences to building Malaysia’s next-generation 5G network, we have consistently challenged ourselves to raise industry standards.

Today, Artificial Intelligence represents the next frontier of transformation, and our strategic collaboration with OpenAI marks another defining milestone in that journey,” – Neil Tomkinson, U Mobile Chief Information Officer

The collaboration also marks OpenAI’s first partnership with a telecommunications provider in Malaysia. OpenAI’s Head of Mid-Market GTM, Asia Pacific, Fred Groen, added that they will work together to explore how AI can improve everything from employee productivity and customer experiences to cybersecurity.

For businesses, OpenAI will become an Anchor Partner of U Mobile’s Enterprise Innovation Platform (EIP). This will allow businesses, startups, developers and academia to co-create and test AI solutions using OpenAI’s frontier models.

U Mobile and OpenAI will also explore future AI-powered products and services for consumers and businesses, while looking at ways AI can improve cyber threat detection and incident response.
