Uefa urged to take drastic action to avoid Ireland-Israel Nations League repeat

  • Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson has called on Uefa to keep Ireland and Israel separated in future tournament draws following two contentious Nations League fixtures fraught with political tension and off-field controversy.
  • The matches, played at neutral venues in Hungary and Serbia due to security concerns and the war in Gaza, ended in a 3-0 victory for Ireland in the first fixture followed by a 1-1 draw in the second.
  • The Football Association of Ireland resisted widespread domestic calls for a boycott over Israel's actions in Gaza due to the risk of severe sanctions from Uefa, particularly given Ireland's role as co-hosts for Euro 2028.
  • Tensions were evident through silent protests on the pitch, with Irish players wearing black armbands and lowering their heads during the Israeli national anthem, while Israeli players wore armbands to commemorate victims of the 7 October attacks.
  • The fixtures were further marred by off-field disputes, including Ireland fitness coach Damien Doyle reporting being spat at by an Israeli player, alongside allegations of racial abuse directed at Ireland forward Adam Idah by Israeli supporters.
