UK expresses ‘full solidarity’ with Germany over attempted Russian drone attack

The Prime Minister has expressed the UK’s “full solidarity” with Germany after Berlin blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack on an airport last month.

Andy Burnham described the incident, in which an explosive-laden drone was discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft at Leipzig-Halle Airport, as an “egregious and reckless attack”.

His statement came after German interior minister Alexander Dobrindt said the attack on August 4 was part of a pattern of “Russian hybrid operations”.

After attributing the attempted attack to Moscow, Germany’s foreign minister Johann Wadephul announced that the Russian consulate in Bonn would be closed and the contract for the Russian House, a cultural centre in Berlin, would be rescinded.

In a statement released by No 10, Mr Burnham said: “The United Kingdom stands in full solidarity with Germany following Russia’s egregious and reckless attack in Leipzig.

“Russian attempts to undermine our united resolve and our willingness to support Ukraine are futile and doomed to fail.”

He added: “The strong measures taken by the German government show action against any attack of this nature will be met with a clear response.

“We will not waver in our resolve to deter attacks on our freedom and security.”
