A UK national arrested in Bali on an Interpol red notice for alleged drug trafficking and money laundering will be deported, Indonesian police confirm.
DENPASAR: Indonesian authorities will deport a British fugitive arrested at Bali’s international airport over the weekend. The 45-year-old man, identified by police as “SL”, is wanted by Interpol for alleged transnational drug trafficking and money laundering.
Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya described the suspect as the alleged leader of a large-scale transnational criminal organisation. The fugitive is wanted by authorities in Spain for his suspected role in the syndicate.
The man, identified by British media as Steven Lyons from Scotland, was flagged upon arrival from Singapore. Airport immigration head Bugie Kurniawan said he was identified as an “Interpol red notice subject” during a routine system check.
Interpol’s Indonesia bureau secretary, Untung Widyatmoko, said the criminal group operated in several countries. These include Spain, Scotland, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Turkey.
Untung confirmed the suspect is expected to be deported to the United Kingdom. Police are now searching for two associates who arrived in Bali with Lyons but managed to evade detection.
