UK heatwave breaks 50-year temperature record for June

Wednesday marked Britain’s hottest June day on record, with a provisional 35.7C breaking the benchmark set in 1976.

The Met Office confirmed the Charlwood, Surrey high surpassed 35.6C, set in 1976 and 1957.

Much of England and Wales has sweltered in hot, humid conditions, prompting a rare Met Office red warning.

This heatwave, driven by a "heat-dome" over western Europe, has caused health warnings, school closures, and transport disruption. For latest updated on the heatwave, click HERE.

The 50-year-old record's fall highlights how climate change, from burning fossil fuels, drives increasingly frequent, intense heatwaves for which the UK is unprepared, experts warn.
