UK heatwave: Drivers warned of melting roads and tyre blowout risk

  • Drivers are being warned about the risks of melting roads and tyre blowouts due to the ongoing heatwave across the UK.
  • AA president Edmund King issued the alert after temperatures reached 35.1C in Kew Gardens, west London, on Tuesday.
  • Several roads in East Anglia have already melted in the heat. Mr King said that surfaces can “soften at temperatures above 50C, which could occur when air temperatures reach 30C”.
  • Mr King added that high temperatures also “stress” older or damaged vehicle tyres, leading to “punctures, wall failures and, most dangerous, blowouts”.
  • Breakdown services have reported a surge in callouts, with the AA seeing a 15 per cent increase over the bank holiday weekend and the RAC being 29 per cent busier than usual on Tuesday.
