UK heatwave: What temperature is too hot to walk a dog?

  • Parts of England are expected to experience a fresh heatwave this weekend, with temperatures set to reach up to 32C.
  • The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued yellow heat health alerts for the South East, the East of England, London and the East Midlands, remaining in place until Monday.
  • The RSPCA has previously cautioned dog owners against walking their pets in hot weather, particularly in areas with little shade such as beaches and fields. Instead, the charity’s website advises to “go out in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.”
  • An RSPCA dog welfare specialist, Esme Wheeler, highlighted the danger, stating that walking dogs in hot weather can be a “silent killer.”
  • The charity also reminded owners of the risks of leaving dogs in cars, noting that internal temperatures can reach 47C within an hour when it is 22C outside.
