MALAYSIA’S first trade engagement under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) with the United Kingdom is poised to open significant avenues for Malaysian exporters—particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs)—to access the UK market.
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the matter was among the key points discussed during his recent meeting with the UK’s Foreign Secretary, David Lammy.
“Together, we could drive economic growth, which is resilient and innovative,” Tengku Zafrul said in a post on X.
The UK officially became the 12th member of the CPTPP earlier this year, marking a new phase in its post-Brexit trade strategy and creating new linkages with dynamic economies across the Indo-Pacific.
The discussion between Tengku Zafrul and Lammy coincided with the British Foreign Secretary’s courtesy visit to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, during which both parties reiterated their commitment to deepening bilateral ties.
Malaysia and the UK upgraded their relationship to a strategic partnership following Anwar’s meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in January.
In a separate post on X, Prime Minister Anwar said Malaysia looked forward to enhanced collaboration in several areas, including investment, energy transition, education, climate change, defence, digitalisation and artificial intelligence. - July 12, 2025
