  • Rape victims in the UK will receive free legal advice throughout the criminal justice process, a measure announced by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to reduce trauma.
  • A new Independent Legal Advisor service will provide guidance outside court, including assistance in challenging 'no further action' decisions made by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
  • The MoJ is also expanding Operation Soteria, a programme designed to improve police investigations into sexual offences, and aims to foster a 'victims first' approach within the courtroom.
  • Justice Minister David Lammy stated that the reforms are intended to address the trauma victims often experience within the justice system and ensure they receive appropriate protection and support.
  • The scheme, which is backed by £6 million over two years, is being introduced as the controversial Courts and Tribunals Bill, proposing judge-only trials for some offences, reaches its Second Reading in Parliament.
