UK spending on temporary accommodation hits record high of £8m a day

  • Councils in England spent a record £2.9bn on temporary accommodation in the year to April, amounting to over £8m every day.
  • Expenditure on emergency accommodation has risen by 88 per cent over the past five years, though the recent 4 per cent annual increase indicates a slowdown in growth.
  • Emergency B&Bs and nightly paid self-contained housing accounted for 65 per cent (£1.78bn) of the total spent by local authorities.
