UK to enter talks to join EU’s £78 billion loan for Ukraine

  • Sir Keir Starmer will announce the UK's intention to join the European Union's €90 billion (£78 billion) loan initiative for Ukraine at the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Yerevan.
  • He said that participation in the loan would benefit Ukraine by providing crucial capabilities, create jobs in the UK through defence contracts, and improve UK-EU relations.
  • Sir Keir co-chaired a meeting on Ukraine with French President Emmanuel Macron, attended by several European leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
  • The prime minister is expected to tell allies that Britain aims to enhance defence co-operation with them and will impose further sanctions on Russian companies this week.
  • The UK's bid to join the loan scheme, recently approved by the EU, is part of a broader effort to reset relations with the bloc.
