UK warns Israel of sanctions over illegal West Bank settlement plans

  • Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced that the UK plans to reset its policy on Israel in the coming weeks, warning that plans to expand illegal settlements in the West Bank cross a red line and threaten the viable future of a Palestinian state.
  • Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar warned that Israel will act against Britain if UK sanctions are imposed over plans to expand West Bank settlements, calling prospective British action a big mistake.
  • Prime Minister Andy Burnham told the House of Commons that Israeli fast-track tender decisions regarding the controversial E1 settlement could imperil or end the prospect of a two-state solution ahead of October's general election.
  • Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty indicated that the UK policy reset could include further sanctions and a complete ban on trade in goods originating from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
  • The UK government strongly condemned the proposed E1 settlement as illegal under international law, emphasising that it cuts through the heart of the West Bank and separates it from East Jerusalem.
