Bristol Airport has suspended all flights for Tuesday morning as heavy rain, flooding and snow continue to disrupt travel and cause school closures.

A passenger announcement from the south-west airport blamed “ongoing weather conditions” for the suspension until 7.30am, adding further announcements will be made “once information is available”.

One man has died in the winter storm impacting much of the country, with North Yorkshire police saying a body pulled from floodwater near the River Aire has been formally identified. The man’s next of kin are still being informed.

Snow and ice warnings are in place across most of south-west England and Wales, and parts of north-west England and the West Midlands, until 10am. The same warning is in place for western and northern parts of Scotland until midday, and in Northern Ireland until 11am.

A major incident was declared by authorities in Lincolnshire on Monday night, with a warning that more flooding could occur today. Lincolnshire Resilience Forum said 34 flood warnings and 29 flood alerts were in place across the county, with reports of 62 properties “internally flooded”.

People living in a flooding hotspot are ‘waiting for the next inevitable incident’ - a local councillor

07:41

Barney Davis

A major incident was declared in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire on Monday after rain brought severe flooding in the Midlands.

Murray Turner, a Liberal Democrat councillor at South Kesteven District Council in Lincolnshire, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme rescue operations had been going on “all day” on Monday.

The area faced bad flooding at the end of 2023 and Cllr Murray said Lincolnshire County Council had been expected to produce a section 19 report to explain the flooding and how agencies could work together to better deal with it in future.

“Now, despite much pressure from the local parish councillors and myself as district councillor throughout 2024, those section 19 reports have never been received,” Cllr Turner said.

“So what’s been happening is we’re waiting for the next inevitable flooding incident and it’s producing very bad scenes in the village.

“You’re walking through silty mud in your front room and you’ve got no power. It’s not very good at all.”

Namita Singh

For the third time in as many days, Manchester Airport was forced to temporarily close both runways due to heavy snowfall. Earlier today, the airport announced the closures on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the extreme weather necessitated the shutdown. While the runways have since reopened, the disruption is expected to cause lingering delays.

Overnight, several flights destined for Manchester were diverted, with at least 16 planes rerouted between 10pm and 1am. Affected flights landed at alternative airports, including Liverpool, Birmingham, Edinburgh, East Midlands, Stansted, and Prestwick, as reported by real-time flight tracking service Flightradar24.

As of this morning, only one flight departing from Manchester has been canceled, though several others are experiencing delays.

My elderly mother can’t afford heating – she needs the winter fuel allowance

06:00

Holly Evans

After a damp and drizzly start to the year, the weather in the UK has taken a dramatic turn and we’ve firmly entered the first real cold snap of 2025 – which not only prompts concern for our own health and safety but also the wellbeing of our more vulnerable loved ones.

Even the most independent pensioners are finding the current conditions challenging.

My 73-year-old mother is no stranger to tough times; she found herself widowed after losing my dad to a gruelling battle with cancer and suffers from debilitating rheumatoid arthritis herself. She’s a powerhouse of strength and is fiercely stubborn, so it came as a shock when she recently told me how worried she was about heating her home this winter and her health fears during this severe cold snap.

Namita Singh

One woman was rescued from a car by a pub owner in Leicestershire who waded up to his chest in frigid floodwaters to pull her from the vehicle and carry her to safety.

Cimi Kazazi, the owner of the Italian Greyhound in Great Glen, had arrived at his business in the morning to find it partially under water, Luigi Salcini, the pub manager told the Associated Press.

The woman had tried to drive to her house when her car, covered with a dusting of snow from the night before, got stuck. Eventually the water rose up to the windows.

“She started to drive but realised the car was deeper and she started going down with the water,” Mr Salcini said.

“She started to scream, ‘Help’ and we came out and Cimi went to rescue her.”

Nearly 60 people were rescued from swamped homes and vehicles, the Leicestershire fire service said on the X social media platform. Emergency workers were trying to pluck children from a school in Edenham, where they were safe but stranded, the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum posted on X.

Flights cancelled at Aberdeen Airport as staff unable to de-ice planes

01:00

Holly Evans

Airline companies based at Aberdeen Airport have had to cancel and delay flights as they have been unable to de-ice planes, with many being rerouted through Edinburgh Airport.

Although the runway at the airport remains open and operational, the respective airline companies have had no choice but to make the decision.

A spokesman for Aberdeen International Airport said: “We understand how frustrating delays can be, especially during challenging weather conditions.

“While the airport is responsible for de-icing runways and taxiways to ensure safe take-offs and landings, the de-icing of individual aircraft is managed by the airlines and their contracted ground handling teams.

“Aberdeen International Airport has remained open and operational due to the hard work of our team in maintaining the airfield.”

Showers are also due to fall as rain or sleet on lower ground on Monday evening, with forecasters warning this could lead to a risk of icy stretches.

How winter fuel payments are changing – and what other support is available to pensioners?

00:00

Holly Evans

Winter fuel payments will be stopped for millions of pensioners this winter as Labour pushes on with its plan to boost public finances by means-testing the cold weather benefit.

The Labour government has been urged to review its decision affecting 10 million pensioners after the regulator Ofgem announced household energy bills will rise by £150 in October.

Sir Keir Starmer has been warned the double hit will lead to disaster for pensioners on low and modest incomes or living in vulnerable circumstances due to ill health.

Potential for further snow on Wednesday

Monday 6 January 2025 21:15

Holly Evans

The Met Office has warned that there is a chance of further snow in the southwest on Wednesday, with a yellow weather warning in place from 9am until midnight.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Mike Silverstone, explained: “There is a chance of a further spell of rain, sleet and snow moving in from the southwest on Wednesday to affect some southern parts of the UK.”

“Whilst not all those in the warning area may be affected, it is possible that that 2-5 cm of snow may accumulate fairly widely. Whether this system will brush the south of the UK or miss us altogether still remains a little uncertain, but we’ll continue to assess this over the next day or two. Weather warnings may well be updated, so it’s important people stay up to date with the forecast.”

Mental health support should be given to those affected by flooding, minister says

Monday 6 January 2025 20:30

Holly Evans

Those affected by flooding should be given support to deal with the mental health impacts “as quickly as possible”, a shadow environment minister has argued.

In the Commons, Dr Neil Hudson said: “We must not underestimate the mental health impacts that flooding has on communities, both in terms of the anxiety of being flooded, but also the trauma when flooding does hit.

“It is essential that practical support is provided as quickly as possible and remains in place after the waters have subsided, and the blue lights have departed.”

He added: “The Conservatives ring-fenced £100 million to help communities threatened by repeated flooding, can the minister commit to that funding, and will those affected by flooding again in this latest period of bad weather be eligible to apply?”

Environment minister Emma Hardy said she shared Dr Hudson’s concern about the mental health impact of flooding, adding: “We’re going to look at (the) flood funding formula in a whole and look at how it all works.”

Met Office warn of hail, sleet and snow leading into Tuesday

Monday 6 January 2025 19:35

Holly Evans

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Frank Saunders, said: “Hail, sleet or snow showers are expected to affect parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, spreading to Wales and parts of northwest England this evening, before moving into part of southwest England, the Midlands and southern England during the early hours of Tuesday. Rain or hail is more likely towards some western coasts.

“Icy stretches which develop overnight as a result of these showers, or the recent wet conditions, could bring some disruption to travel.

“In addition to the ice, we could see snow accumulations of a few cm above 200 metres, with a chance of greater than 5 cm above 200 metres in Wales. The heaviest snow showers may also produce temporary accumulations of 0-2 cm at low levels. It is not possible to say exactly where this snow might fall, so it’s important that people are prepared.”

Government to invest £2.4bn in flood defences

Monday 6 January 2025 18:46

Holly Evans

Environment minister Emma Hardy said the Government intends to refresh its approach to funding flood defences and bring in a new approach in 2026.

She told the Commons: “Flood defence integrity is at its lowest since 2009/10, with approximately 60,000 properties less well protected than if flood defences were at an optimal condition. This is why we’re investing £2.4 billion over the next two years to build and maintain flood defences.”

She added: “To make the most of our flood forming, we’ll be refreshing our approach to funding flood defences, including a review of the existing flood funding formula … to ensure the challenges facing businesses and rural and coastal communities are taken into account when delivering flood protection.

“We were going to consult on this new approach in the new year, and of course, I’ll inform all members when that consultation is live, and we aim to bring the approach in from April 2026.”

Body found in flood water in North Yorkshire

Monday 6 January 2025 18:15

Holly Evans

Police have asked for help in identifying a body found in flood water. North Yorkshire Police said the body was recovered earlier on Monday from an area of flooding near Intake Lane in Beal, close to Eggborough and Knottingley.

Officers have made inquiries locally and with neighbouring forces in Humberside and West Yorkshire but have been unable to identify the man, who was found without any personal belongings.

He was white, in his early 50s to 60s, with light brown short hair and stubble.

He wore brown walking boots, blue jeans with a brown belt, a multi-coloured knitted jumper with a zip and hood and a waterproof coat which was possibly dark green.

The man was believed to have entered the water on Saturday or Sunday.

In a post shared on social media, the force said: “Does this description match someone you know who could be missing? Do you have CCTV, doorbell, or dashcam footage from the area, or any information that could help us piece together what happened?”

Flooding is ‘personal priority’, says environment minister

Monday 6 January 2025 17:37

Holly Evans

Environment minister Emma Hardy told the Commons that “flooding is a personal priority” for her, after fresh weather warnings were issued across large parts of the UK on Monday.

In a statement, Ms Hardy said that as of Monday the Environment Agency’s areas of most concern are the Midlands, Warwickshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, with a major incident declared in Leicestershire.

She added: “The EA (Environment Agency) are continuing to respond in affected areas, including in the Midlands, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Birmingham, Nuneaton, Loughborough and the river Trent, Avon, and Idle.

“The Environment Agency are reporting at least 350 properties have flooded, and over 21,000 properties protected since New Year’s Eve. Over the next 24 to 36 hours, as water moves to the lower reaches and slower responding catchments, there will likely be some localised flooding across multiple smaller areas.

“Climate change will inevitably lead to more severe weather of the kind you have seen this weekend, but I want to reassure the House that flooding is a personal priority for me and one of our top five priorities in Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).”

Simon Calder on a third weekend in a row of weather-triggered disruption to UK aviation

Monday 6 January 2025 16:01

Holly Evans

For a third weekend in a row, thousands of airline passengers woke up where they did not intend to be after large-scale flight cancellations. The Independent calculates that at least 150 flights to, from and within the UK were grounded on Sunday 5 January alone because of heavy snow and high winds.

With few alternative departures available, it is likely that 20,000 passengers were stranded – both in the UK and abroad – because their flights were cancelled or diverted.

The biggest problems were at Manchester airport, where the runway was closed because of snow for three hours on Sunday morning. The closure triggered 15 diversions – mainly of intercontinental flights – and 70 cancellations.

Some planes were diverted abroad, to Paris, Dublin and Shannon. The unluckiest passengers to be caught up in the snow chaos were the 243 on board Singapore Airlines flight SQ52, who endured not one but two diversions from Manchester to Gatwick.
