UK will not have to pay millions over failed Rwanda deal – here’s why

  • A court has ruled that the UK is not obligated to pay Rwanda millions of pounds over the failed migrant deportation agreement.
  • Rwanda had claimed it was owed over £100m in payments promised under the deal.
  • The country also sought an additional £6m in compensation for the UK's failure to receive vulnerable refugees.
  • Rwanda argued that Britain should have taken in 300 refugees, likening the approach to the one-in, one-out deal with France.
  • The Court of Arbitration in The Hague heard that the UK government did not formally withdraw from the deal until December 2025, despite earlier pledges.
