Ukraine endures one of largest aerial Russian assault since war began

KYIV came under sustained missile and drone bombardment early Sunday morning in what independent observers described as one of the most intense Russian assaults on the Ukrainian capital since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Reuters reported on Sunday that the barrage, which continued into daylight hours, saw swarms of drones fly over the city as anti-aircraft systems lit up the skies with return fire. Kyiv’s military administration reported that at least six people had been injured as of 4:40 a.m. GMT.

Residents were forced to seek shelter in underground metro stations as air raid sirens sounded across multiple regions.

The scale of the attack prompted heightened alert beyond Ukraine’s borders, with neighbouring Poland closing airspace near the southeastern cities of Rzeszów and Lublin, and scrambling fighter jets in response.

The assault was ongoing as of 7:20 a.m. local time (0420 GMT), with damage assessments and casualty figures expected to rise. - September 28, 2025
