Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pledged support to Romania following the crash of a Russian drone into a residential building there, and has called for more pressure to be brought to bear on Russia.

Ukraine stands ready to support Romania in any way necessary, he wrote on the social media platform X on Friday.

Zelensky shared a post from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in which she also announced that she would further increase pressure on Russia following the incident.

"We count on the European Union’s new sanctions measures against Russia to be truly strong and to make Russia feel that its strikes mean significant losses for Russia itself," Zelensky wrote.

He also mentioned what he called "yet another cynical attack on civilian infrastructure" in the southern Ukrainian region of Odessa, which also borders Romania.

Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia with Western help for more than four years. Since the start of the war, debris from Russian drones has crashed several times in Romania near its border with Ukraine.
