Ukraine has accused Vladimir Putin of "violating operating rules" for sending old oil tankers into the sea during rough weather after two Russian vessels carrying fuel sustained severe damage in Kerch Strait.
The Volgoneft 212 tanker, with 15 people on board, carrying about 4,000 tonnes of oil split in half with its bow sinking. At least one of the sailors died in the incident, Russian officials said.
The vessel sank, spilling oil in the Black Sea near Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014
Russia pressed tugboats, helicopters and more than 50 personnel to rescue the crew members from the 1969-built vessel, before suspending the rescue operation due to bad weather on Sunday.
The second Russian-flagged ship, the Volgoneft 239, was drifting after sustaining damage, Russian officials said.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military claimed Russian soldiers were killed by North Korean troops in a friendly fire while fighting in Kursk.
The HUR said a group of North Korean soldiers opened fire on and killed eight members of the Chechen Akhmat unit fighting for Russia.
It comes after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky warned a “significant number” of North Korean soldiers had joined forces with Russian troops to attack Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk.

A Russian oil tanker carrying thousands of tonnes of oil products split apart during a heavy storm yesterday, spilling oil into the Kerch Strait, while another tanker was also in distress after sustaining damage, Russian officials said.
The vessels were in the Kerch Strait between mainland Russia and Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, when they issued distress signals.
Russian investigators opened two criminal cases to look into possible safety violations after at least one person was killed when the 136-metre Volgoneft 212 tanker, with 15 people on board, split in half with its bow sinking.
The Russian-flagged vessel, built in 1969, was damaged and had run aground, officials said.
The second Russian-flagged ship, the 132-metre Volgoneft 239, was drifting after sustaining damage, Russian officials said. It has a crew of 14 people and was built in 1973.
Ukraine says it destroys Russian train carrying fuel

Ukraine’s security service said it had launched an operation to destroy 40 rail cars carrying fuel to Russian troops in an area of the Zaporizhzhia region Moscow holds in southern Ukraine.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) claimed the operation involved different intelligence and military services and unfolded over a series of stages.“The aim was to disrupt the logistical supply routes for fuel from Crimea to temporarily occupied areas of Zaporizhzhia,” it told Reuters.
Russia has so far not commented on the alleged incident.
The SBU said one of its units organised a sabotage operation that damaged a rail line as the train was moving near the village of Oleksiivka in a Russian-held part of Zaporizhzhia region.
The train was halted, with tanker cars ablaze, and army units fired US-supplied HIMARS missiles at the site. “The missiles struck the locomotive and cars at the end of the train. The enemy was unable to reach the tanks and salvage some of the fuel,” the statement said.

Russia has launched hundreds of bombs, drones and missiles at Ukraine over the past week, according to President President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In a post on X this morning, he said: “This week alone, Russia has used nearly 630 guided aerial bombs, around 550 strike drones, and over 100 missiles of various types against Ukraine.
“I am grateful to the warriors defending Ukraine and to our partners who understand our need to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses to save the lives of our people.
“Now, the world must be united and stronger than ever. Only through strength can we together force Russia and its allies to give up terror and achieve a just peace.”

Ukraine is battling against a “prevailing” Russia in the eastern Donetsk region, Kyiv’s military chief has admitted, as Vladimir Putin’s forces look to secure as much territory as possible before US president-elect Donald Trumpre-enters the White House.
Ukrainian military chief Oleksandr Syrskyi described the fighting as “extremely tough” as he was pictured visiting the Pokrovsk area in Donetsk on Wednesday, where Russian forces have advanced to within just a few miles of the city’s outskirts.
The area is a linchpin of the wider region’s defence and war trackers have expressed concern that should it fall, it could pave the way for Russia to seize swathes of more territory.
My colleague Tom Watling looks at the flashpoints of the frontline:

Last week, the UK chief of defence, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, warned us that we are at the dawn of a third nuclear age. He misses the point. The nuclear threat is deadly, but it is our conventional weakness which will invite attack by Russia. We must recognise that Russia’s war in Ukraine is more than a cynical and genocidal assault against a democratic neighbour by a permanent member of the UN Security Council, a signatory of the UN Charter prohibiting the use of force in international relations.
It is a war against the West and all that brings. It is also a war against Ukraine joining the West and it started, not with the full-scale invasion in February 2022, but in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea. As Dmitri Trenin, former head of the Carnegie Moscow Centre and an ex-senior Soviet Army officer, wrote in 2016: “The Kremlin has been at war with Nato since 2014.”

Ukraine slams Fifa over Crimea map

Ukraine has slammed Fifa for an “unacceptable error” after a map displayed during the 2026 World Cup draw appeared to exclude Crimea from the country’s territory.
The map, used to show nations that cannot be drawn to play against each other for geopolitical reasons, highlighted Ukraine but excluded Crimea, which is internationally recognised as part of its territory.
Crimea has been under Russian occupation since 2014, though only a few countries recognise it as Russian territory.
“FIFA has not only acted against international law but has also supported Russian propaganda, war crimes, and the crime of aggression against Ukraine,” Ukraine’s foreign ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said.

Ukraine replaces commander amid Russian push towards Pokrovsk
Sunday 15 December 2024 07:30
Namita Singh
Ukraine has replaced the commander overseeing its eastern Donetsk forces following significant Russian advances near the strategically important city of Pokrovsk, a military official announced on Saturday.
General Oleksandr Tarnavskiy has been appointed to lead the operational and tactical group, succeeding General Oleksandr Lutsenko. The leadership change follows mounting criticism of General Lutsenko for failing to prevent recent Russian progress in the region.
Russian troops have been reported within 3km of Pokrovsk, according to the Ukrainian mapping service DeepState. The city, located approximately 17km from the border between Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions, has been the scene of some of the most intense fighting on Ukraine’s eastern front in recent months.

Pokrovsk holds significant strategic value for Moscow. Its capture would mark a major setback for Ukraine, representing the most substantial territorial loss in months. The fall of the city would also escalate the challenges for Ukrainian forces, which are already struggling under immense pressure on the eastern front lines.
The heightened tensions come as Ukraine faces additional uncertainty over its future military aid from the US. Concerns have grown with the potential return of Donald Trump to the presidency, raising fears that Kyiv’s largest source of support could reduce or withdraw assistance entirely as the conflict nears its fourth year.
How can Putin be defeated? Assad’s fall provides lesson for West
Sunday 15 December 2024 07:00
Alexander Butler
The fall of the Assad regime in Syria has led to questions over Russia’s ability to sustain its military adventures abroad. Russia had supported Assad militarily for over a decade, building on longstanding ties between Moscow and Damascus.
But the rapid advance of anti-government forces this month saw Russia apparently powerless to influence the situation beyond a number of airstrikes (as always, apparently mostly delivered on civilian targets) in support of government forces.
That has inevitably led people to draw conclusions about Russia’s ability to project power overseas, and what it may mean for the course of the war in Ukraine.

Ukraine war would be ‘resolved’ in month, says Trump envoy

Donald Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia said the ongoing war between the two countries will be “resolved in the next few months” as soon as the Republican takes office.

His remarks come as Russia prepares for Mr Trump to assume office.
“Russia is ready to study Trump’s proposals on Ukraine, but studying does not mean agreeing,” state news agency RIA Novosti posted to Telegram.
Last week, in a statement on Truth Social, Mr Trump wrote that “Zelensky and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness”.

Ukraine condemns Fifa over map omitting Crimea
Sunday 15 December 2024 05:30
Namita Singh
Ukraine has sharply criticised Fifa for excluding Crimea from its territory on a map displayed during the 2026 World Cup draw, calling the mistake “unacceptable” and demanding accountability.
The map was used to illustrate nations prohibited from being drawn together in the tournament due to geopolitical tensions. While Ukraine was highlighted on the map, Crimea—internationally recognised as part of its territory—was noticeably absent. Crimea has been under Russian occupation since 2014, but the annexation is recognised by only a few nations.

We fixed the map for you and expect a public apology. pic.twitter.com/UAr7voKqGi
Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for Ukraine’s foreign ministry, condemned the omission, asserting that it violated international law. “Fifa has not only acted against international law but has also supported Russian propaganda, war crimes, and the crime of aggression against Ukraine,” he wrote on X, sharing a corrected version of the map that included Crimea. Mr Tykhyi also demanded a public apology from the global football governing body.
Fifa has since responded, stating it was “aware of an issue” and had removed the map. However, the Ukrainian Football Association has escalated the matter by formally addressing Fifa secretary-general Mathias Grafström and Uefa secretary-general Theodore Theodoridis in a letter.
The letter voiced “deep concern” over the incident, pointing to the consistency of Fifa and Uefa’s past decisions that upheld Ukraine’s territorial integrity. It further stated: “The cartographic image of Ukraine displayed on December 13, 2024, is completely unacceptable and looks like an inconsistent position of Fifa and Uefa.”
The incident has intensified scrutiny over Fifa’s handling of politically sensitive issues, with Ukraine continuing to push for stronger measures to prevent such errors in the future.

Nine-year-old Russian boy dies in Ukrainian strike
Sunday 15 December 2024 04:30

Ukrainian drone strikes on southern Russia killed a 9-year-old boy and set fire to a major oil terminal, officials said yesterday.
The boy died when a drone struck his family’s home outside Belgorod, a Russian city near the border with Ukraine, local governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported yesterday morning on the Telegram messaging app. His mother and seven-month-old sister were hospitalised with injuries, Mr Gladkov said.
He posted photos of what he said was the aftermath of the attack, showing a low-rise house with gaping holes in its roof and front wall flanked by mounds of rubble.
Elsewhere in southern Russia, Ukrainian drones overnight hit a major oil terminal in the Oryol region, sparking a blaze, Ukraine’s General Staff reported. Photos published by the General Staff and on Russian Telegram news channels showed huge plumes of smoke engulfing the facility, backlit by an orange glow.
Oryol governor Andrey Klychkov confirmed that a Ukrainian drone strike set fire to a fuel depot. He said later the blaze had been contained and that there were no casualties.

North Korean troops join Russian assaults in significant numbers, Kyiv says

Russia has begun using North Korean troops in significant numbers for the first time to conduct assaults on Ukrainian forces battling to hold an enclave in Russia’s Kursk region, president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said yesterday.
The Ukrainian leader said the more active use of the troops was a new escalation in the war and called for a global response, as Donald Trump’s return to the White House next month fuels speculation of a coming push for peace talks.
“Today, we already have preliminary data that the Russians have begun to use North Korean soldiers in their assaults. A significant number of them,” Mr Zelensky told Ukrainians in his daily wartime address.

The North Koreans were being used in combined Russian units and only on the Kursk front for now, he said, adding: “We have information suggesting their use could extend to other parts of the front line.”
Kyiv first said North Korean forces turned up in Russia’s Kursk region in October and later reported unspecified clashes and casualties. It estimates there are 11,000 North Koreans in total, adding to a force of tens of thousands of Russians.
Russia has neither confirmed nor denied the presence of North Koreans on its side.

Ukrainian drones attacked an infrastructure facility storing fuel in central Russia’s Oryol region, sparking a fire and smashing windows in homes, regional governor Andrei Klychkov said early on Saturday.
Mr Klychkov, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said a “mass attack” on an infrastructure site caused fuel to catch fire. Fragments from downed drones smashed windows in homes, he said.
Video posted on Ukrainian military blogs showed a fire blazing at what was described as a fuel storage facility. Reuters could not independently verify reports from either side.
Yellen won't rule out sanctions on Chinese banks, curbs on 'dark fleet' oil tankers

US treasury secretary Janet Yellen told Reuters on Friday that the US is looking at further sanctions on “dark fleet” tankers and will not rule out sanctions on Chinese banks as it seeks to reduce Russia’s oil revenue and access to foreign supplies to fuel its war in Ukraine.
Ms Yellen said in an interview that the US and its allies also could consider lowering their $60-per-barrel oil price cap on Russian oil, which prohibits Western insurance and maritime services on cargoes above that level.
The treasury has already sanctioned individual tankers and their owners for operating above the price cap and can do more in this area, Ms Yellen added, suggesting additional measures in the five weeks before she leaves office.
EU to enforce first-ever sanctions on Russian intelligence over disinformation operations

The European Union is preparing to impose its first sanctions against Russian intelligence for orchestrating disinformation and hybrid activities, Bloomberg reported. The proposed sanctions will target over a dozen individuals and three entities, including Russian intelligence officials and media entrepreneurs.
This move aims to counteract global destabilising operations attributed to Moscow.
Additionally, the EU intends to impose sanctions on approximately two dozen Belarusian individuals for alleged human rights abuses or connections to president Alexander Lukashenko’s regime.
This is part of a comprehensive sanctions package set to be ratified by EU foreign ministers on 16 December in Brussels.
The latest proposals align with the EU ambassadors’ recent endorsement of a 15th sanctions package against Russia. Announced by the Hungarian Presidency of the EU Council on 11 December, this package targets Russia’s “shadow fleet” of older tankers used to circumvent oil export restrictions.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky will attend a meeting with the leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Nato and the EU in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss support for his country in its war with Russia, sources familiar with the plan told Reuters.
The meeting comes as European countries face the possibility of the US, Ukraine’s largest source of support, changing its approach to the conflict when Donald Trump returns to the White House in January.
Mr Zelensky and some of his European allies have called for European troops to be deployed to Ukraine to act as a deterrent to further military action by Russia after any ceasefire.
“It won’t be a meeting that has concrete decisions, but more political to discuss the coming weeks and months,” said a source familiar with the meeting.
The gathering, hosted by Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte, will be held on the day leaders were already due to meet for the EU-Western Balkans summit in Brussels, and involve a joint meeting and several bilateral meetings with Mr Zelensky.
