Russia has launched a fresh air attack on Kyiv, Ukraine’s military said, as president Volodymyr Zelensky’s demands for an immediate ceasefire fall on deaf ears.

Residents in the Ukrainian capital were ordered to “stay in shelters” by mayor Vitali Klitschko, while air defences lurched into action to down the Russian drones.

Several explosions were heard around the city by witnesses for Reuters news agency, in what sounded like air defence systems in operation.

The attack came just hours after Mr Zelensky has said Ukraine is ready to commit to a full 30-day ceasefire starting today, reiterating his push for Moscow to accept “complete silence” so the two countries can work out next steps towards peace.

“We are ready to move toward a ceasefire even starting today, if Russia is ready to take reciprocal steps: complete silence, a lasting ceasefire of at least 30 days,” he wrote on social media.

“That’s a fair timeframe to prepare the next steps. Russia must stop the war—halt its assaults and shelling.”

Earlier, Ukrainian forces destroyed a Russian fighter jet using a sea drone in a world first, Kyiv’s military intelligence has said.

Shortly after sitting down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ funeral, Donald Trump was left with a lingering concern: perhaps Vladimir Putin was just “tapping” him along.

The second Trump-Zelensky meeting, by all accounts, was a much more positive affair than their notorious clash in the Oval Office in late February. And on Wednesday it appeared to pay off – with the U.S. and Ukraine finally signing a long-awaited minerals deal.

Now, insiders have revealed details of the Vatican exchange between the two world leaders, and how it may have helped create a diplomatic breakthrough and boost Ukraine’s fortunes in the ongoing war with Russia.

What is the Su-57 Russian fighter jet?

18:23

,

Alex Croft

Designed in the "pixelated" camouflage colour scheme, the Sukhoi fighter jet’s body has a colour mix of dark and light grey with and black pixels, which experts say is designed to add to its stealth capabilities.

According to chief test pilot Sergei Bogdan, the latest Russian fifth-generation fighter jet has no limits for development and is the first such Russian warplane that can participate in real combat. Its stealth feature – the first in the Russian Air Force – comprises a low signature design which minimises its chances of detection by radar systems.

It can be developed for carrying missiles and bombs in cargo compartments and has a major onboard defence complex. The jet also features an internal weapons bay for the pilot, allowing a flexible choice between a long-range or a close-combat missiles option in a scenario of military engagement.

Mr Bogdan claims the fighter jet’s agility could give it an edge over its American competitor F-35.

According to its manufacturer, serial production of the aircraft began in 2022.

Mr Zelensky added that Mr Orban is doing “very dangerous things” for the EU.

Ukraine says it shot down Russian fighter jet from sea drone for first time

Tara Cobham

Ukraine destroyed a Russian Su-30 fighter jet using a missile fired from a seaborne drone, Ukraine's GUR military intelligence agency said on Saturday, in what it said was the world's first downing of a combat plane by a maritime drone.

Its statement on social media said the fighter had been shot down by a military intelligence unit called Group 13 on Friday over waters near Novorossiysk, a major Russian port city on the Black Sea.

Outmanned and outgunned by its larger, wealthier Russian adversary, Ukraine has turned to drone warfare in the air and at sea as a way to fight back throughout the three years of full-scale war.

Ukraine's seaborne drones, which are much cheaper and smaller than conventional ships, have wrought havoc on Russia's Black Sea fleet.

Ukraine has previously said it shot down a Russian military helicopter in December 2024 using a missile fired from the same type of seaborne drone.

Kremlin claims Ukrainian response to Putin's ceasefire offer is ambiguous

,

Tara Cobham

The Kremlin has said it wants a definitive response from Ukraine to Russian President Vladimir Putin's offer of a three-day ceasefire next week, claiming the reaction so far has been ambiguous and historically wrong.

Mr Putin on Monday declared a three-day ceasefire from to mark the 80th anniversary of the WW2 victory

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared to rule out such a brief ceasefire earlier on Saturday, saying he was only ready to sign up to a ceasefire that would last at least 30 days, an idea Putin has said needs a lot of work before it could become a reality.

Mr Zelensky also said that Ukraine, given the continued war with Russia, could not guarantee the safety of any foreign dignitaries who came to Moscow for the 9 May parade.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Mr Putin's three-day offer had been a test to assess Kyiv's readiness to search for a peaceful settlement to end the war.

"The reaction of the Ukrainian authorities to Russia's initiative to introduce a ceasefire is a test of Ukraine's readiness for peace. And we will, of course, await not ambiguous but definitive statements and, most importantly, actions aimed at de-escalating the conflict over the public holidays," Mr Peskov said.

Russia accuses Zelensky of 'threatening' world leaders attending Moscow Victory Day celebrations

Russia has accused Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky of having “unequivocally threatened” world leaders who are planning to arrive in Moscow for its Victory Day celebrations.

Mr Zelensky said that Ukraine cannot provide security assurances to foreign officials planning to visit Russia around 9 May for its World War II commemorations, warning that Moscow could stage provocations and later attempt to blame Ukraine.

In response to Mr Zelensky's comments, which were made public on Saturday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that he had "unequivocally threatened the world leaders who are planning to arrive in Moscow on 9 May."

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday that Russia expects Kyiv to take steps to de-escalate before Victory Day.

"We will, of course, expect (from) Kyiv not ambiguous, but final statements, and most importantly, actions aimed at de-escalating the conflict during the holidays," Mr Peskov told journalists.

Russia's Medvedev says nobody can guarantee Kyiv's safety if Ukraine attacks Moscow on 9 May

12:07

,

Tara Cobham

The deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council has said nobody could guarantee Kyiv would survive to see 10 May if Ukraine attacked Moscow during World War Two victory celebrations on 9 May.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday declared a three-day ceasefire in May in the war with Ukraine to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union and its allies in World War Two.

Responding to Moscow's offer of the three-day ceasefire, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was ready as long as the ceasefire would be 30 days in length, something Mr Putin had already ruled out in the near term, saying he wants a long-term settlement not a brief pause.

Mr Zelensky said Ukraine, given the continued war with Russia, could not guarantee the safety of any foreign dignitaries who came to Moscow for the traditional 9 May victory parade.

"We cannot be responsible for what happens on the territory of the Russian Federation. They are responsible for your security, and therefore we will not give you any guarantees," he said.

Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian president who has emerged as one of Moscow's most outspoken anti-Western hawks since the start of Russia's war in Ukraine, called Mr Zelenskiy's statement a "verbal provocation" and said nobody had asked for Kyiv's security guarantees for the 9 May events.

"(Mr Zelensky) understands that in the event of a real provocation on Victory Day, nobody will be able to guarantee that Kyiv will live to see May 10," Medvedev said on his official Telegram channel on Saturday.

Russia's Medvedev calls Trump's statement about US World War Two role 'pretentious nonsense'

10:39

,

Tara Cobham

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, said on Saturday that President Donald Trump's assertion that the US had done more than any other country to win World War Two was "pretentious nonsense".

Mr Trump posted on social network Truth Social late on Thursday that "nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance" in both world wars, and that "we did more than any other country, by far, in producing a victorious result in World War II”.

Mr Medvedev, a former Russian president who has emerged as one of Moscow's most outspoken anti-Western hawks since the start of Russia's war in Ukraine, made his own statement at a time when Washington and Moscow are trying to reset their troubled ties while discussing a possible way to end the conflict.

"Trump recently announced that the US made the biggest contribution to victory in World War Two and that he will introduce a special holiday on 8 May. A holiday is not a bad thing, but his first statement is pretentious nonsense," Medvedev said in a post on the VK social network.

"Our people sacrificed 27 million lives of their sons and daughters in the name of destroying accursed fascism. Therefore, Victory Day is ours and it is May 9! So it was, so it is, so it will always be!" wrote Mr Medvedev.

Ukrainian forces to join UK military procession for Victory in Europe anniversary

08:07

Ukrainian armed forces will take part in a British military procession on Monday celebrating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, which marks the end of fighting on the continent during World War Two.

Ukrainian personnel will join around 1,000 UK armed forces members, including soldiers on horseback and military bands, to symbolise "the global support for their continued fight for freedom" against Russia, the government said in a statement on Saturday.

8 May is observed in many countries including Britain, France and the United States as the date when the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany took effect in 1945.

Russia fought alongside the Western allies as the Soviet Union - which then included Ukraine. It marks the occasion on 9 May.

Britain plans various events in the run-up to the anniversary, including a military parade and a flypast, culminating in a service of thanksgiving on Thursday at Westminster Abbey in London that is due to be attended by the royal family.

Britain has staunchly supported Kyiv since the war in Ukraine began, providing billions of pounds in military aid and placing wide-ranging sanctions on Russian entities and individuals to punish Moscow for the conflict.

"In the midst of the first full-scale war in Europe since the Second World War, it is fitting that the Ukrainian Armed Forces currently fighting on the frontline of freedom are represented in Monday's event," defence minister John Healey said in the statement.

Donald Trump wants Kyiv to swap peace for land. Ukrainians say that’s too painful to contemplate

Vitali Klitschko, the former heavyweight boxer who is now mayor of Kyiv, ventured last month into hazardous political territory: he delicately suggested in an interview that Ukraine might need to cede land to end its battle against Russia.

After a flood of angry online comments, he walked back his comments, saying on Facebook that "territorial concessions contradict our national interests and we must fight against their implementation until the last".

US President Donald Trump and his negotiators believe the only route to ending the Russian war in Ukraine is for Kyiv to acknowledge in some form that it is not getting back the Ukrainian land Moscow's troops have taken since invading.
