Ukraine has lost a Western-donated F-16 fighter jet for the first time, after one of the aircraft crashed during operations to intercept a massive Russian missile and drone attack.
The crash killed one of Ukraine’s most experienced pilots, Colonel Alexei “Moonfish” Mes, who had been one of the faces of a campaign to encourage Western allies to supply Kyiv the jets.
The crash occurred on Monday during a massive Russian air attack, during which four Russian missiles were shot down by F-16s.
Mes had traveled to the US in 2022 to lobby for F-16 support and met with senior American members of Congress.
Earlier, the UK, the European Union and Ukraine ramped up calls for Kyiv to be allowed to strike deeper into mainland Russia, saying that restricting anything short of full capability renders their long-range missiles “useless”.
Speaking in Brussels, the EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba urged Kyiv’s allies to “lift restrictions”.
“The weaponry that we are providing to Ukraine has to have full use, and the restrictions have to be lifted in order for the Ukrainians to be able to target the places where Russia is bombing them. Otherwise, the weaponry is useless,” Mr Borrell said.

Serbia announces deal to buy 12 French warplanes in shift away from Russia

Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic has announced a $3bn deal to buy 12 French warplanes, in a move that shifts his country away from its dependence on Russian arms.
The announcement about the Rafale multi-purpose fighter jets was made during a joint news conference in Belgrade with French president Emmanuel Macron, who was on a two-day visit to Serbia.

Mr Macron called it a “historic and important” deal and praised Serbia’s “strategic courage. It’s a true demonstration of European spirit”.
An official in Mr Macron’s office, who was not authorised to be identified according to French presidential policy, said the warplane deal was part of larger strategy of “bringing Serbia closer to the EU”.
Serbia needs to upgrade its fleet and the Rafale is a “strategic choice” for Belgrade, which could choose to rely only on Russian equipment instead, the official said.
Serbia had been considering the purchase of the new Rafale jets for more than two years, since neighbouring Balkan rival Croatia purchased 12 used fighter jets of the same type.
Chinese leader Xi meets US national security adviser as the two powers try to avoid conflict

Chinese leader Xi Jinping met with US national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Thursday as the latter wound up a three-day visit with the stated aim of keeping communications open in a relationship that has become increasingly tense in recent years.
The two also discussed China’s support for Russia, as a recent US assessment found that the country was exporting technology that Russia uses to manufacture missiles, tanks and other weaponry. They also discussed efforts to end the Ukraine war, but Mr Sullivan said they did not make any progress on that issue.

Starting with a trade war that dates back to 2018, China and the US have grown at odds over a range of issues, from global security, such as China’s claims over the South China Sea, to industrial policy on electric vehicle and solar panel manufacturing. Mr Sullivan’s trip this week is meant to keep the tensions from spiraling into conflict.
Ukraine says one of its Western-donated F-16 warplanes has crashed

One of the handful of F-16 warplanes that Ukraine has received from its Western partners to help fight Russia’s invasion has crashed, Ukraine’s Army General Staff said on Thursday. The pilot died.
The fighter jet went down on Monday, when Russia launched a major missile and drone barrage at Ukraine, a military statement posted on Facebook said. Four of those Russian missiles were shot down by F-16s, the statement said.
The crash was the first reported loss of an F-16 in Ukraine, where they arrived at the end of last month. At least six of the warplanes are believed to have been delivered.
The defense ministry has opened an investigation into the crash.
The Ukrainian air force in a Facebook post identified the pilot as Colonel Alexei “Moonfish” Mes, who “saved Ukrainians from deadly Russian missiles, unfortunately, at the cost of your own life.”
Moonfish and a fellow Ukrainian pilot, Andrii “Juice” Pilshchykov, made an early, public visit to the US in June 2022 to press lawmakers and media to send Ukraine F-16 fighter jets and they both continued to serve as public faces for Ukraine’s battle to secure its airspace.
Juice was killed in an August 2023 accident.“When I met with Ukraine pilots Juice and Moonfish I had a sick feeling they wouldn’t make it through the war,” former US congressman Adam Kingzinger posted on X. “They fought like hell for Ukraine, and the F16.”

Russian military power is a ‘caricatured exaggeration’, says senior Kyiv official

The number of Russian soldiers captured during Ukraine’s cross-border assault into Kursk further shows that its military power is a “caricatured exaggeration”, an advisor to the Ukrainian presidential office has said.
Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that the “low morale” of Russian forces was evident in the success of Ukraine’s attack.
He added that Ukraine had captured in less than four weeks around 200 more Russian soldiers than than the Soviet Union lost in a decade of war in Afghanistan.
Mr Podolyak told The Independent earlier this month that the Ukraine attack had exposed the disarray in Russia’s military.
According to the official statistics, 417 Soviet soldiers were captured and disappeared during the ten years of the war in Afghanistan. In the few weeks of the Ukrainian defense operation in the #Kursk region, 594 Russian soldiers have already surrendered. This is another…

Russia claims to have captured two towns in eastern Ukraine

Russian forces have captured two villages in eastern Ukraine, Russian news agencies have claimed, citing the Kremlin defence ministry.
They cited Stelmakhivka in Luhansk region and Mykolaivka in Donetsk region as having fallen.
The Independent was not able to verify these claims and Moscow has a habit of prematurely reporting the takeover of a Ukrainian town.
Ukraine‘s General Staff in a morning update said that Ukrainian forces were repelling attacks in the area of Stelmakhivka, which sits right on the frontline.
DeepState, a Ukrainian open-source intelligence group that tracks developments on the frontline, and which is known to have close ties to the Ukrainian military, reports that both towns remain under Ukraine’s control.
EU minister arrive in Brussels to discuss Ukraine after snubbing Hungary

European Union ministers have arrived in Brussels for a meeting to discuss support for Ukraine after refusing to hold the event in Hungary despite Budapest holding the bloc’s presidency.
Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, was pictured in Brussels this morning with Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba.
The informal council usually takes place in the country chairing the rotating presidency of the EU. But following tensions between Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban and the EU, the EU’s informal foreign and defense ministerial meetings on 29-30 August, respectively, will take place in Brussels instead of Budapest.
After assuming the presidency on 1 July, Hungarian PM Viktor Orban went on a tour of Kyiv, Moscow, Beijing and later Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, urging Ukraine to the negotiating table.
EU states denounced the trip, saying Orban did not speak on behalf of the bloc, before reaffirming their support for Ukraine.

Debris from intercepted drones damaged civilian infrastructure in Kyiv this morning, as overnight Russian strikes continued for the third day in a week.
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the damage to buildings in the capital as several explosions were heard in Kyiv and surrounding areas.
Debris from drones fell in at least three districts of the capital, causing a fire in one of the areas. Firefighters responded to the affected areas.
This was the third large scale aerial attack by Russian forces on the capital in the past four days.

The Ukrainian military today claimed that it had attacked the “Atlas” oil storage facility in Russia’s Rostov region on Wednesday.
The depot near the Kamensk-Shakhtinsky town lies roughly 15km east of the border with Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine’s Luhansk Oblast and around 170km (over 100 miles) from the frontline.

The military said in the same message on Telegram that it attacked the “Zenit” oil depot in Russia’s Kirov region and a field artillery depot in Russia’s Voronezh region.
The Atlas facility specialises in producing petroleum products for the Russian Armed Forces and belongs to Russia’s Federal Agency for State Reserves.

Ukraine has successfully negotiated debt relief of more than $20bn from private international bondholders, bolstering Kyiv’s efforts to finance its escalating war against Russia.
Ukraine’s finance ministry said that all Ukraine’s bondholders voted in favour of the deal that will reduce the face value of their debt by more than a third.
It will unlock $11bn for the country’s finances over the next three years by lowering interest payments.
“This is an important step on Ukraine’s path to restoring long-term economic stability and will enable our swifter re-entry to international markets once the security situation improves,” Sergii Marchenko, the Ukrainian finance minister, said on Wednesday.
Ukrainian first lady says kids should see themselves as ‘generation of winners’ not war victims
Thursday 29 August 2024 06:21
Shweta Sharma
Ukraine’s first lady wants her country’s children to view themselves not as a generation enduring a grinding war but rather as “a generation of winners.”
On the sidelines of a day spent at a rehabilitation camp for Ukrainian children in the relatively safe western city of Uzhhorod, Olena Zelenska said on Tuesday that working with the next generation was a moral obligation and a “strategic priority” for Ukraine’s future.
Many of the children will return to front-line cities after spending a few weeks at the camp created by Voices of the Children charity, barely enough time to overcome the trauma they face over and over.
“This issue needs to be addressed immediately, as soon as it arises, before it grows into something more,” Ms Zelenska told The Associated Press in a brief interview at the camp, which is sponsored by the foundation that bears her name.

A study by the Olena Zelenska Foundation, funded entirely by foreign donations, and the Kyiv School of Economics this year found that 44 per cent of Ukrainian children show signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.
“To ensure our children do not become a lost generation, we as adults must take quick action,” Ms Zelenska said. “It’s difficult with the ongoing defense of the country. However, I am confident that political will combined with international cooperation can work wonders.”

Russia is getting increasingly desperate and the attacks are becoming more cowardly, the British ambassador said in a statement at the UN Security Council meeting.
James Kariuki, the UK deputy permanent representative to the UN, condemned Vladimir Putin for the alleged war crimes in Ukraine and his “continued barbarity” against the Ukrainian people.
“President Putin thought Kyiv would fall within days. He was wrong. And Ukrainian courage continues to prove him wrong every day,” he said.

He said over 35,000 civilians in Ukraine have been confirmed killed or injured since Russia’s invasion began.
“These most recent attacks represent continued evidence that Russia is intentionally targeting civilian energy infrastructure, risking further humanitarian crisis this coming winter,” he added.

Nato members call for lifting restriction on long-range strikes against Russia

Some Nato member countries have called for clearing restrictions on the use of long-range missiles against Russia, according to reports.
The Nato-Ukraine Council met yesterday and Nato secretary general Jens Stoltenberg said: “Allies today reaffirmed they are stepping up their military aid to Ukraine.
“We must continue to provide Ukraine with the equipment and munitions it needs to defend itself against Russia’s invasion. This is vital for Ukraine’s ability to stay in the fight,” he said.
Several Nato countries called for allowing Ukraine to use weapons supplied by western allies, specifically long-range missiles, a diplomatic source told AFP.
Poland’s foreign minister Radosław Sikorski highlighted that Russia was using long-range weapons against Ukraine.
He urged allies to “let Ukraine fight with whatever it has, with whatever we have delivered them and let’s deliver them more”.
The US restricts the use of long-range ballistic missiles it provides to Ukraine, which wants to aim them at military targets inside Russia.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, in his latest address, called on the West to lift restrictions on long-range airstrikes by Ukraine.
“We continue to insist that decisiveness now, removing restrictions on Ukraine for long-range strikes now, will help us end the war as quickly as possible in a just manner for Ukraine and the entire world,” he said.
Russia says it defused unexploded munitions fired by Ukraine near Kursk nuclear power plant

Russia said its forces had defused unexploded US-supplied munitions fired by Ukraine that were shot down just 5 km (3 miles) from Russia’s Kursk nuclear power plant, which Moscow has accused Ukrainian forces of trying to strike.
The announcement was made by Russia’s National Guard and accompanied by a video of the unexploded munitions and of sappers blowing them up.
It came a day after Rafael Grossi, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog, inspected the plant, which he said was vulnerable due to a lack of a protective dome that could shield it from missiles, drones or artillery.
There was no immediate comment from Ukraine on the purported Russian find, and Reuters could not independently verify the location of the video.
Russia bans entry to 92 US journalists, including WSJ, NYT and Washington Post
Thursday 29 August 2024 03:56
Shweta Sharma
Russia’s foreign ministry has banned 92 American citizens including journalists, lawyers, and the heads of what it said were key military-industrial firms from entering Russia over Washington’s Russophobic stance, it said.
The list, published on Telegram by the ministry, included 14 Wall Street Journal employees, five senior journalists from the New York Times and four from the Washington Post.
The Wall Street Journal, whose journalist Evan Gershkovich was freed this month in a prisoner exchange after 16 months in Russian detention, described the bans as “laughable” and part of attacks on free press.
Russia’s foreign ministry said it was targeting editorial staff and reporters from “leading liberal-globalist publications” involved in producing and disseminating what it described as “fakes” about the Russian armed forces.

It said the bans were in response to the Biden administration’s “Russophobic course”, a key part of which has been sweeping sanctions on Russian politicians, business figures, scientists and journalists.
“We remind the current US authorities about the inevitability of punishment for hostile actions, whether it is direct encouragement of (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky and his henchmen to commit acts of aggression and terrorist attacks, or attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation,” the ministry said.
In a statement, a Wall Street Journal spokesperson said: “The Putin regime is farcically consistent in its all-out assault on free press and truth. This laughable list of targets is no exception.”
