The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Russia’s conflict would escalate into World War III (WWIII), the former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said. There is a possibility that nuclear weapons will be utilized. He claimed in a statement that both sides are unlikely to give in and predicted that the Europeans would once more endanger the planet.
According to one of the agreements between the NATO nations, an attack on one NATO member would be seen as an attack against all NATO members.
“What does the current circumstance imply? Ukraine isn’t a member yet. In the event of a Russian strike, NATO is not compelled to go to war with Russia. On the other side, if Ukraine is admitted into NATO, a Russian strike would lead to war with NATO” according to Dr Mahathir.
The Langkawi MP also discussed how, ever since Germany was defeated in World War II, the Western alliance has been at odds with Russia. In order to defend themselves against the Soviet Union, which was created by Russia from the Warsaw Pact, the European countries and the US forged an alliance.
As a result, NATO and the Eastern alliance, respectively, engaged in the Cold War in an effort to persuade other nations to join the Western or Eastern “Communist” blocs. The futility of the conflict between the two blocs was eventually realized by the Russians.
“Mikhail Gorbachev’s administration ended the Warsaw Pact and allowed the Soviet Union to disintegrate. Many communist nations in Central Asia and Eastern Europe attained independence”, he said.
NATO also extended an invitation to former Warsaw Pact nations, with the exception of Russia, whose military had become weakened by the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Thus, Dr Mahathir claimed, Russia decided to rearmament when NATO members increased their recruitment of people from Russia’s neighbourhood.
