Ukrainian foresters are battling a major forest fire in the northern Chernihiv region, right on the border with Russia, while working under threat from Russian drones, officials said.
The fire was sparked by Russian shelling and has engulfed 2,400 hectares of woodland, according to the state forestry agency.
For safety reasons, foresters have long been unable to access the border area near the villages of Yelyne and Tychonovytshi.
Attempts are being made to create firebreaks using tractors to prevent the flames from spreading, the agency said.
Enemy drones are constantly in the air, and jammers are being used to counter them. Nevertheless, much of the mobilized fire-fighting equipment cannot be deployed.
There has not yet been any attempt by the Russian army to invade Ukraine along this section of the border. Russia has been waging a devastating war against its neighbour Ukraine for more than four years.
