In a resolute declaration, Umno Secretary-General Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki emphasized today that all federal and state lawmakers from the party remain firmly committed to supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. This confirmation came during a crucial Umno Supreme Council meeting at Menara Dato Onn, Kuala Lumpur, held in anticipation of the upcoming first anniversary of the Anwar administration.
Marking the one-year milestone of Malaysia's unity government, the Umno Supreme Council reiterated its commitment to fortify and uphold the unity government as mandated by the Agong. Asyraf stated, "The meeting also confirmed that all Umno parliamentarians and state assemblymen will continue to support the party’s position to back Anwar’s leadership as prime minister and the unity government of Malaysia."
Further solidifying their stance, the meeting aimed to reinforce the principles of cooperation agreed upon by the coalition parties within the unity government. Asyraf explained, "We also agreed to strengthen the principles of cooperation agreed upon between the parties that make up the unity government through agreements that have been signed, especially regarding the position of Islam as the religion of the federation, the institution of the Malay Rulers, the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras, and the Malay language as the official language."
The Anwar administration is set to celebrate its anniversary with an event at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. Notably, the "unity government" is a collaboration of coalitions, including Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, and their respective allies.
Anwar currently commands the support of 152 MPs, with five from the opposition Perikatan Nasional. This backing provides the government with a comfortable two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat. Notably, 30 BN MPs, including 26 from Umno, contribute to this supermajority. Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also serves as a deputy prime minister.
This alliance between PH and BN extends to the state governments of Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Perak, Penang, and Pahang, while GPS and GRS lead in Sarawak and Sabah, respectively. The reaffirmation of support for Anwar Ibrahim's leadership underscores Umno's commitment to the stability and continuity of the unity government as it marks its first year in office.
