UMNO cannot take victory for granted in the forthcoming parliamentary and state by-elections in Kinabatangan and Lamag, scheduled for 24 January, according to the party president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He highlighted that independent candidates and smaller parties in Sabah may enter the race, making a smooth win uncertain.

“But ideally, we should give Naim Kurniawan Moktar the opportunity to win, as he is merely carrying on the remaining service of the late Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.

“I hope this ensures continuity,” Zahid said at a press conference after officiating the Kirana Village Complete Package announcement at Dataran Pantai Batu 23, Sungai Nibong, near Sekinchan on Saturday.

Regarding the Lamag state seat, Zahid explained that UMNO has alternative strategies, including negotiations, which would be handled by UMNO Sabah Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Jafry Ariffin.

“Several names have already been proposed, but I leave it to him to make the decision following a series of consultations with division leadership,” he added.

Zahid emphasised that these by-elections are not simply about defending party seats.

“As is known, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will not be fielding candidates, and I personally contacted Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor regarding this matter. Similarly, several other parties may refrain from contesting as they have only recently gone through the state election,” he said.

He added negotiation may prove the most prudent approach given the short interval before the 16th General Election, which is expected in less than two years.

“So, I think it is wise to conserve our resources,” Zahid added. - December 20, 2025
