Kuala Lumpur: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is confident that the party will be able to satisfactorily explain to the Registrar of Societies (RoS) the no-contest motion for its top two posts.

He said the party had 60 days to get back to RoS on the matter.

“I’m confident we will get a positive response,” he told reporters at Parliament today.

Umno officials met RoS director-general Nawardi Saad on Jan 31, with documents on the party’s decision to bar any contests for the posts of president and deputy president.

Zahid brushed off allegations of a possible breach in the party’s constitution, saying the party has explained the various provisions in the Constitution to the RoS.

With the general assembly being Umno’s highest authority, the no-contest motion is not an issue, he said.

Last week, RoS gave Umno 60 days to give a detailed explanation on the motion, which was approved at the party’s recent general assembly.

Two Umno members had lodged a report with RoS about three weeks ago seeking an investigation into a possible breach of the party’s constitution.

They claimed the tabling of the motion at the general assembly had breached Article 10 of the party’s constitution. They also insisted that it had to be tabled two weeks before the general assembly, or seven days if tabled by the Supreme Council.

Umno was reported to have been split over whether the top two posts should be contested, with some saying it risked dividing the party, and others arguing that Zahid and his deputy, Mohamad Hasan, must prove they had the support of the grassroots.
