The Umno Supreme Council has directed its party machinery and supporters to campaign for Perikatan Nasional candidates in the upcoming Melaka state election.

PETALING JAYA: Umno has instructed its party machinery and supporters to campaign for Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidates in the upcoming Melaka state election after unanimously agreeing to strengthen political cooperation with PAS and other PN component parties.

The decision was among several resolutions adopted at the party’s Supreme Council meeting today, signalling Umno’s commitment to supporting PN candidates in the state polls.

In a statement, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the council had unanimously endorsed political cooperation and understanding with PAS and other PN parties ahead of the election.

“The Supreme Council unanimously agreed to endorse political cooperation and understanding with our strategic partner PAS and friends from PN in facing the 16th Melaka state election,” he said.

Asyraf said the council had also directed all party machinery and supporters to give their full backing to PN candidates contesting in the election.

It also agreed that Barisan Nasional (BN) and PN would introduce a joint election manifesto outlining their commitments to the people of Melaka.

He said the manifesto would focus on delivering the best possible services to the public while sustaining the state’s development and building on the achievements of the previous state administration.

The council also called on party leaders and campaign workers to uphold responsible campaigning throughout the election period, urging them to avoid slander, insults and personal attacks against political opponents.

In a separate matter, Umno urged the federal government, particularly the Finance Ministry, to reverse directives cancelling development projects affecting communities in Sabah and Sarawak.

The party highlighted rural road projects and initiatives to improve water and electricity supplies, saying these were important to communities in both states.
