UMNO faces defining test as return of former leaders looms ahead of key meeting

UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan has expressed confidence that applications from former members seeking to rejoin the party will be approved at the party’s Supreme Council meeting this Friday, in what could mark a significant step towards internal consolidation.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Ahmad, who sits on the party’s ‘Rumah Bangsa’ unity committee, said the initiative—designed to welcome back former members, including those who had resigned or were expelled—has already undergone preliminary deliberations chaired by UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

"All the names will be brought to the Supreme Council meeting on Friday, April 17, at 8pm at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh.

"I am confident… this is not the committee’s decision. This is my confidence as a committee member, that there are no obstacles for the names that have applied to be approved," he said.

The meeting, scheduled to take place at the Melaka International Trade Centre, comes at a critical juncture as UMNO prepares for upcoming state elections in several regions, including Melaka, Johor and Sarawak.

Ahmad noted that the Rumah Bangsa initiative, inspired by party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, is grounded in a principle of inclusivity, aimed at strengthening the party by reopening its doors to those willing to return.

He urged observers to await the official outcome of the meeting, which is also expected to address procedural matters such as membership reinstatement details and eligibility to contest in future elections.

While declining to elaborate on specific high-profile applicants, Ahmad acknowledged that the committee continues to receive requests, including from prominent former leaders.

"I myself will recommend that we do not object to any names," he said.

Among those reported to have submitted applications are former senior figures such as Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Khairy Jamaluddin, whose potential return could reshape internal party dynamics.
