Umno’s top leadership imposed two clear conditions before approving the Umno Youth convention held in Kuala Lumpur on 3 January 2026, according to party insiders familiar with internal discussions. The conditions reportedly required Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh to avoid raising any call for the party to withdraw from the unity government and to refrain from criticising Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Sources said the approval for the convention was granted only after these assurances were conveyed to Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Party leaders indicated that the understanding formed the basis on which the programme was allowed to proceed, as the leadership wanted to prevent internal deliberations from escalating into public challenges against the party’s current political position.

According to one senior Umno figure who spoke on condition of anonymity, the ideas raised by Akmal during the convention—including proposals for Umno to leave the government, realign with PAS, or shift its political direction—were not discussed with Zahid beforehand. The source added that Zahid neither endorsed nor encouraged such discussions and did not issue any directive for the youth wing to debate withdrawal from the unity government.

Despite this, Akmal stated at the opening of the convention that the event had received Zahid’s approval. He also suggested that the party president was prepared to support grassroots calls for Umno to exit the unity government, framing the issue as one that could expose Zahid to political pressure if such a move were pursued.

Another Umno insider disputed this narrative, saying Zahid had never signalled readiness for such a drastic step. While the youth wing was given permission to organise the convention, the source stressed that approval of the gathering should not be interpreted as endorsement of the resolutions or positions expressed during the assembly.

The insider emphasised that any decision involving Umno’s participation in the unity government falls under the authority of the party’s Supreme Council, not its youth wing. For now, Umno is said to have no intention of moving into opposition, with the leadership prioritising political stability and governance responsibilities.

As internal debate continues, party leaders appear keen to draw a clear line between youth-level discussions and official party policy, signalling that strategic decisions remain firmly in the hands of the top leadership.
