The decision by Umno to collaborate with PAS in organizing a solidarity rally for former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has sparked concerns over its potential impact on Malaysia’s national unity government.
DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng expressed his apprehensions during a press conference, warning that such a move could destabilize the government and challenge Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership as prime minister.
“Umno must realize that any collaboration with PAS, a key component of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, jeopardizes political stability,” Lim stated. He added that this raises questions about Umno’s sincerity in supporting the unity government, which was established in 2022 based on the advice of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The rally, planned for January 6, coincides with Najib’s Appeal Court hearing regarding his request to serve his sentence under house arrest, reportedly based on a Royal decree. This marks the first joint effort by Umno and PAS since their Muafakat Nasional alliance dissolved in 2022 when Umno aligned with the Anwar-led unity government.
Lim noted that the rally follows recent personal attacks by Umno Youth leader Dr. Muhammad Akmal Saleh against Anwar, questioning his legitimacy as prime minister. Lim criticized such actions, emphasizing that Anwar was officially pardoned by the King in 2018.
“Umno, as part of the unity government, should avoid such campaigns that risk undermining political cohesion,” Lim stressed. He highlighted that the move could erode public confidence in Umno’s commitment to national unity and stability.
Lim also pointed out that Umno’s joint event with PAS, an opposition party, could cast doubt on its political stability and allegiance to the coalition government.
Accompanying Lim at the press conference was DAP veteran leader Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, underscoring the gravity of the issue for the unity coalition.
The upcoming rally raises critical questions about the long-term stability of Malaysia’s political landscape. With Umno and PAS revisiting their past alliance, the move not only tests the unity government’s cohesion but also raises broader concerns about the challenges of maintaining political alliances in the face of diverging interests. As the situation unfolds, the rally could become a defining moment for Malaysia’s political trajectory.
