Umno polls show solid support for unity govt: Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR – The recently concluded Umno polls have shown that grassroots members stand firm with party leaders in supporting the unity government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president also reiterated that the party is now united in its commitment to a stable government.

“The recent Umno polls show that grassroots members want national leaders who support the unity government.

“Over 160,000 members have participated in the polls and the results also proved that efforts from external sources to divide the party have been unsuccessful.

“It is clear that grassroots members want the country’s administration, along with Barisan Nasional and parties from Sabah and Sarawak, under the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to continue,” he told a press conference after attending the unity government’s second secretariat meeting at Umno’s headquarters in Menara Dato Onn here, this evening.

The Umno polls concluded today with Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, Johor Umno chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, and Federal Territories Umno chief Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani winning the three Umno vice-presidential posts.

Similarly, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir, and Umno information chief Isham Jalil are also among the 25 Umno members elected to its Supreme Council.

According to the official results of the party’s polls, other Supreme Council members include Umno secretary-general and Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, and former Lembaga Tabung Haji chairman and former Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim.

The results were confirmed by the party’s elections committee chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad following the voting process involving 187 divisions today, Umno Online reported.
