UMNO reps urge NS state assembly to convene emergency sitting amid uncertainty

CALLS are mounting for Negeri Sembilan’s leadership to immediately convene a special sitting of the State Legislative Assembly as political tensions escalate following a reported collapse in support for the current administration.

The appeal comes amid growing uncertainty after a group of assemblymen withdrew their backing for Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, raising questions over the government’s ability to maintain a stable legislative majority and continue routine governance.

Negeri Sembilan UMNO chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias said an urgent special sitting was necessary to break the impasse and restore political stability in the state.

"If they hold out for up to six months (by postponing the state assembly sitting), the government will be run in an unstable condition and various problems will arise, which could in turn create uncertainty in the state administration.

"Moreover, the consequences may open the door to various new problems. Therefore, a special state assembly sitting must be called to resolve all the political crises that are taking place for the sake of stability and the interests of the state government," he said.

Jalaluddin, who is also the Pertang assemblyman, further cautioned that continued delay in reconvening the House could impede governance and slow down the implementation of key state policies.

He urged the Speaker of the State Assembly, Datuk MK Ibrahim Abd Rahman, to take immediate steps to summon a special sitting to deliberate and resolve the ongoing political deadlock.

"That step is seen as the only option to return the situation to normal and ensure that the state administration can run more stably.

"In my view, a special sitting must be called in the near future, we have no second option," he said.

The political situation in Negeri Sembilan has deteriorated following reports that 14 UMNO and Barisan Nasional assemblymen withdrew their support for the current administration, citing unresolved issues involving the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, the Undang Yang Empat and the Tunku Besar of Seri Menanti.

Adding further complexity, five Perikatan Nasional assemblymen have reportedly submitted a written proposal to UMNO and Barisan Nasional suggesting cooperation aimed at restoring political stability in the state.

The uncertainty has been compounded by the postponement of the Negeri Sembilan State Assembly sitting, which was scheduled to resume after its ceremonial opening by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

The postponement, announced by Aminuddin following the opening ceremony, has left the state without a clear legislative timetable as political tensions continue to unfold. - April 29, 2026
