In a powerful address at the Umno Youth General Assembly, Datuk Dr. Akmal Saleh, the Umno Youth Chief, made a bold declaration that the party must strive to regain its dominance in the federal government. Akmal emphasized that Umno should not be satisfied with merely complementing other parties in the unity government, but rather should aim to reclaim its position as the leading force in Malaysia’s political landscape.
His fiery speech touched on key issues that have long been at the heart of Umno’s political struggle, particularly the defense of race and religion.
Akmal’s call for Umno to expand its current representation from 26 MPs to two-thirds of the seats in the Dewan Rakyat underscores a broader ambition to return to the era when Umno was the unchallenged powerhouse in Malaysian politics. He firmly asserted that Umno Youth has consistently been at the forefront of defending Malay and Muslim rights.
However, Akmal’s vision for Umno’s future is not without its challenges. His strong rhetoric on the race and religion, while resonating with the party’s traditional base, has drawn criticism for potentially deepening divides within Malaysia’s multicultural society. Furthermore, the notion of Umno re-establishing its dominance has been met with skepticism from political analysts, who argue that the era of one-party rule is over in Malaysia, much like in other parts of the world.
Political Analyst Awang Azman Pawi from Universiti Malaya highlighted the global trend toward power-sharing and coalition governments, noting that even in countries like Indonesia and Thailand, where single-party dominance was once the norm, political realities have shifted towards collaboration among multiple parties. He cautioned that without strengthening its grassroots support, particularly within its youth wings, Umno’s aspirations could remain mere rhetoric.
Adding to the complexity of Umno’s position is the statement from its president, Dato' Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who effectively put a damper on Akmal’s solo ambitions. Zahid pointed out that the political landscape has evolved, and with the influx of new voters, Umno can no longer rely solely on its traditional base to secure victory. He stressed the importance of collaboration with other parties to achieve political success, urging Umno members to break out of their “echo chamber” and face the new political realities head-on.
Zahid’s remarks reflect a pragmatic approach to navigating the current political environment, where coalitions and alliances are increasingly necessary to govern effectively. This pragmatic stance, however, seems at odds with Akmal’s more combative vision of Umno’s future.
As Umno finds itself at a crossroads, the question remains whether it will pursue a return to dominance or embrace a role as a key player in a coalition government.
Akmal’s passionate defense of Umno’s traditional values and his call for the party to reclaim its leading position will undoubtedly energize the party’s base, but it remains to be seen whether this strategy will resonate with the broader electorate in a rapidly changing political landscape.
